Dr Sarah Appleton

BSc Hons, DClinPsy, CPsychol

I am a Chartered Clinical Psychologist who specialises in Weight Management. I completed my doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the University of Oxford and have since worked in five different specialist weight management and bariatric services across the UK and in America. I am currently the Psychology Lead for the largest NHS weight management service in the UK; a Healthy Weight Clinical and Care Professional Lead in South East London; and Chair of the British Psychological Society Obesity and Bariatric Network.

I am acutely aware of the shame and stigma that can surround difficulties with weight and believe that providing a safe, truly non-judgemental, space to explore weight related distress is a key foundation for change. While always informed by research, I draw upon a variety of different therapeutic models to create a care plan that is tailored to the needs and preferences of the individual. This may include approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), Mindfulness and Functional Imagery Training (FIT).

I have experience of working with a range of different weight-related challenges including emotional eating, binge eating, low self-esteem, anxiety, depression or body image disturbance.

In my spare time you will probably find me hiking (I am working towards my “Mountain Leader” accreditation) or, as a recently converted cat-lover, spending time with my one-eyed cat “Borgne”.
